Hi, I’m Sophie, the latest intern to join the Spark team. I’m going to be working at the Spark for two days a week up until just before Christmas and I’m looking forward to gaining an insight into what the world of journalism is really like.
Since joining the Spark last week, I’ve been working on the Ignite section and working hard to find the most exciting events taking place over the winter period. My aim is to fill your December, January and February with so much to do that you won’t even notice the cold!
I first came across the Spark about a year ago, as I set out on my mission to find myself a work placement. I study English Literature with Creative Writing at the University of Surrey but as soon as I became a member of my university radio station’s news team in my first year, I have known that journalism is for me. Coming from a reasonably alternative and environmentally aware family, the Spark’s unique and varied content also really interested me.
Upon exploring The Spark website, I was pleased to come across lots of tips for wannabe writers and I hoped that if I could secure an internship with The Spark, that the team would be willing to impart some of their wisdom to me. I had decided early on that I wanted to move back home to Trowbridge for the year and make the most of home comforts, (particularly Mum’s roast dinners) and so when I found out that The Spark is based in Bristol, I was even keener to work with them.
I visited the office right back at the beginning of the year, met some of the team and Darryl told me all about his journey into journalism. He encouraged me to gain as much experience as I possibly could and it was then that I decided to break my placement year up into sections and so here I am, doing a three-month stint at The Spark.
I’ll be sure to keep you up to date with how I’m getting on!
