Changes Start with... THE SPARK "at the heart of the alternative west country"

• How long have you been involved with The Spark?

Had to look this one up. And am quite surprised to see it’s been over seven years.

• What's your role at The Spark?

I supply the two Q&A Profiles – the one near the front and the Changemaker interview at the back. Sometimes other bits and pieces too.

• What is your particular interest/focus?

I think I am essentially very nosey – I’m just slightly obsessed with finding out people’s stories. I’m with the people I write about for such a brief time, usually an hour or so, and I try to get to the meaning behind what they’re doing - what these people believe, how they think, where their passion springs from and the often strange and wonderful paths their lives have taken. I don’t always agree with them (as I’m sure you don’t sometimes) but it’s always fascinating for me to hear about their journey and there’s always something to learn.

• When I say I work at The Spark people say...

“Ooo yeah, I know that mag” and then go on to tell me why they should be in it.

• Something that might surprise you about my job is...

That I didn’t have to have my chakras re-birthed to do it!

• Something that might surprise you about The Spark is...

That what is now such a wide-ranging – in terms of subject and area it’s distributed – magazine, all comes from a tiny, attic office space. I just found out at the last writers meeting, for example, that we send copies to Romania.

• I know its been a good day when...

I feel I’ve made a real connection with the person I’ve just interviewed, and feel I can pass on something I think is important to the readers. Especially when it’s about somebody that maybe you/we have never heard of that  maybe operates under the radar a bit and deserves to be known about.

• The thing I'm most proud of is...

Not misquoting people, even when it would have been funnier/more interesting/more provocative to do so!

• Before I worked for The Spark I...

Worked for The Independent on Saturday and Sunday Magazines for ten years, interviewing celebrities. I sit in far fewer posh London hotel lobbies these days, but on the plus side meet far nicer people…

• When I'm not working for The Spark I...

Act as PA to my two children!

• What I like about working for The Spark is...

Meeting people whose paths would probably never have crossed mine, and learning something from them. I love the croissants at the writers’ meetings too.
