There is such a thing as a free lunch

Where we wish Vicki well with the birth of her first babber and Bill talks free lunch and community gardens.

We said goodbye to Vicki on Tuesday as she gets ready for the arrival of her first child. I have to say a great big thank you to Vicki as she has been brilliant at showing me how to do things at The Spark and in preparing most of the content for the next issue. We all wish her the best of luck with the birth and look forward to seeing her and the baby soon. She'll be back in the editor's chair in six months.

One of the aspects of work at The Spark that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling is our free lunches. Thanks to the wonderful folks at Better Food Company, we get a weekly supply of salad veg, bread, crackers, dips, cheese, olives and spreads. Every day we're in the office we gather for lunch in the meeting room at 1 o'clock and share great food and conversation. Sometimes people bring in stuff they've cooked, like pasta, to add to the variety. It's all very tasty.

I know the Better Food Company very well as I used to get a weekly veg box from them when I lived in Bristol. It was great value and was just right for the two of us. It was so easy to get all our organic veg delivered right to the doorstep. They reuse the boxes (although I wasn't very good about putting out the empty one to be collected each week; the worst time was when I left four out at once... sorry!) and the deliveries are made very early in the morning so that the vans are running efficiently and not stuck in traffic adding to Bristol's pollution.

The people of Churchlands Community in Bristol

Another group of people that are getting their hands dirty live in and around Churchlands Road in Bedminster in the south of Bristol (photo above). They have decided to turn a piece of tarmacked wasteland on the corner of West Street into a community garden. The parcel of land was donated by the owners, the South Bristol Christian Centre, who couldn't afford to develop it. Last weekend was the first dig for the garden. You can find some great photos on their Facebook page, Churchlands Community. If you live nearby, please think about getting involved. They are especially looking for some topsoil, so please get in touch if you can help - and let us know of anything similar in your own neighbourhood.
