Mums with very premature babies are encouraged to express milk – it stimulates babies’ immune systems, helps weight gain and brain development. But sometimes mums aren’t able to – their hormones haven’t kicked in yet, they’re under great stress, etc. Milk donated by other mothers is the next best thing. Donors’ milk is tested and pasteurised with fortifying vitamins and a little pre-term formula added to give the very best mix.
The Precious Drops Campaign is raising £250,000 to set up a human milk bank for the South West. The bank will be named after Paediatric Professor David Baum, a great breast milk advocate who died recently, and will be based at Southmead Hospital, Bristol.
